Abstract
Tetanus is one of the most serious infectious diseases and has a high mortality in the diseases of bacterial origin in spite of the discovery of antibiotics, especially in Korea.
There are many studies about its causes, pathology, and treatment. Since the improved managements with tetanus antitoxin, penicillin, phenobarbital, sodium amytal, chlorpromazine, meprobamate, steroid and muscle relaxants had introduced, the mortality has been much reduced.
20 cases of tetanus who were admitted in Severance Hospital during 10 year¢¥s period have been analysed about portal of entry, clinical symptoms and sings, treatments and causes of death.
1) The males were more frequently affected than the females, but the mortality rate of females was higher than that of males.
2) Shorter incubation period as well as higher fever, more serious course of the disease has been usually noted.
We couldn¢¥t find any relation between mortality rate and age or poiital of entry.
3) Most patients who died, was expired within 5 days after admission, or a week after onset.
